Hello, I request to be added as a writer to Lessons From History.

Who’s your favorite historical figure and why?

Owing to growing up in New Mexico, I have always been fascinated by William Bonney aka Billy the Kid. He was a truly terrible person, but his short reign of terror is also a deep part of the history of the West. There is a museum in Lincoln County, NM that has some of his handwritten letters and his penmanship was impeccable, but the content of the letters was very childlike. Fascinating juxtaposition.

Can you judge the past with today’s lens?

Can we? Of course we can and we certainly do. Should we is maybe the better question. Culture, norms, values, and outlook changes so much over time. It's hard to compare today with times past, but as the old saying goes, those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.

I look forward to your decision either way. Thank you so much. - K
